The High Adventure experience accommodates 14 to 20 year old youth and will, if interest is shown, organize experiences for youth down to 6th grade. Registration in the High Adventure group costs $35 which covers insurance. Each trip has its own costs which vary depending on the location and length. Leaders work to keep costs as low as possible and North American Hydro donates part or all of the ground transportation costs. Effort is made to find scholarships for youth who may not be able to pay the fee. Community member Gerald Lewis has started a fund to raise money for this effort and to fund other costs of starting a group in Montello.
Trips are varied and all require attendance at pre-trip training sessions. Parents are encouraged to sign up also, but are reminded that the trips are strenuous. Parents who may not be able to keep up the pace with teens can often still go along and work at base camps, for instance. The trips utilize the buddy system where 2 campers are paired together, given the same equipment, maps, information and support, and are on their own to make the trip successful.
All trips strive for zero impact on the environment. For more information about the High Adventure experiences, contact Jeff Steckbauer (920) 229-4940 or Bill Harris (920) 570-2145.
