K2 (Spice)

Please be aware that a newer drug, K2, has made its way into Wisconsin.

"Experts say K2 users risk exposing themselves to an unexpectedly high dose of the chemical or another additive they weren’t expecting due to the lack of regulation. “It’s potentially more dangerous than marijuana because nobody knows who makes it or what’s in it,” says Dr. Mark Kostic, associate director of the Wisconsin Poison Center.

What is K2?

K2 (also called Spice) is a synthetic marijuana analogue (meaning it acts on some of the same brain receptors as marijuana). It is sold as an herbal incense.

What does K2 do?

It produces a powerful but short-lived hallucinatory experience. Panic attacks and psychotic episodes have also been reported.

How is it used?

K2 is produced in powder form and then sprayed onto a material that is sold to be smoked.

Is it illegal?

Yes. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency published a temporary order to ban the substances used in making K2 on March 1, 2011. The action by the Drug Enforcement Administration makes it illegal to possess or sell the five chemicals used to make the products for at least one year. The agency and the Department of Health and Human Services will determine whether the chemicals should be permanently added to the federal list of controlled substances considered unsafe, highly abused and without medical use.
